Foster Care

Foster care is a very important necessity for all rescue groups.  Fostering gives pets a chance to enjoy a low-stress environment during a very difficult time in their lives.  For our facility, fostering provides a safe haven for pets with medical and behavioral concerns.  These selflessly devoted volunteers then provide sanctuary and continuous care for pets who require a more one on one approach to their care.  Examples are, but are not limited to; pregnancy, weaning, heart-worm disease, FIV, anxiety, bottle feeders and so much more.

We are looking for:

• Long-term fosters who will be able to accommodate a pet in need throughout their treatment, up until they are adopted.  Our goal is for these pets to never see the inside of a shelter again!  Our foster families work closely with staff to ensure the pet receives everything they need until they find their forever home.
• Fosters for recovery periods for pets who have had non-routine surgeries or procedures.
• Fosters for emergency medical situations that require care and monitoring better suited to a home environment.
• Fosters for cats who need a space as the only cat until adoption.

By checking each statement below, you agree to the following terms: *

• Only designated WCHS staff shall approve and place rescued animals into foster homes. WCHS management must be notified as soon as possible of any changes in the status of either the animal being fostered, or the foster’s home environment.
• WCHS is responsible for providing any and all basic supplies the foster pet may require during their stay in the foster home. This includes food, crates/cages, medications, etc. Any other supply requests must be discussed with WCHS management for deliberation and approval.
• All animals placed in foster care will be examined by a Board approved vet, as well as be updated on vaccinations and testing per the recommendation of said vet.
• All medical expenses related to the reason indicated for foster will be covered by WCHS. Authorized WCHS must approve any medical testing, or treatment needed prior to care being given.
• All fosters must get WCHS management approval for any emergency care.
• Foster animals are to be kept monitored, clean, and well-groomed for their safety and overall well-being.
• Fosters are expected to keep their foster pets safe within adequate housing. All WCHS pets are indoor pets. Any foster found housing a pet outdoors will have their foster agreement immediately terminated, the pet removed from the home, and legal action will take place.
• All fosters are expected to follow the medical and/or behavioral treatment plan set forth by WCHS management. Fosters are expected to report any medical or behavioral concerns immediately.
• Fosters are expected to use WCHS approved trainers only.
• Fosters are required to pass daily medications or carry out any other required care during their foster pets stay.
• Fosters are expected to exhibit professional conduct, timeliness and open communication skills with both WCHS staff, and participating veterinary care teams.
• Fosters are expected to care for the foster animal for the duration of time agreed upon with WCHS management. Foster pets are not to return to WCHS during the time foster care is needed as to eliminate any disruptions in the care plan set forth.
• Legal ownership of all WCHS animals will remain as so during their stay in foster care.
• Any and all potential adoption interest will be handled by WCHS management. No introductions should be carried out by the foster, nor should any animal to animal meet and greets take place with WCHS staff supervision.
• Any questions presented to the foster about the pet, or the WCHS adoption process must be forwarded to WCHS staff for follow up. With any adoption interest, all prerequisites must be met, and the adoption process must be followed.
• The foster pet MUST ALWAYS remain in the fosters care! There will be no pet sitting or boarding unless otherwise agreed upon by WCHS management.
• If a foster decides to adopt their foster pet once they are cleared by the participating vet, the foster will work with WCHS management and follow proper adoption procedures.
